Overview and Learning Objectives

The student will be able to:

  • Understand monohybrid inheritance, especially the equal contribution of genes from each parent;
  • Understand random shuffling of genes into the gametes;
  • Select gametes with specific alleles for fertilization in order to produce a particular phenotype.

Classroom Practice

This activity introduces meiosis or gamete formation, the random distribution of the alleles, and allows the student to inspect the alleles in each gamete using an enlarged window, and to choose particular gametes for fertilization in order to produce a dragon with a specific trait. The concepts of gametes, meiosis, and fertilization are linked to further the students' understanding of the inter-relationships of the three.
